Colchester

A market town that is historic, Colchester /ˈkoʊltʃɛstər/ within the Colchester borough is the settlement that is largest in Essex. Regarded as Britain's oldest recorded town claiming to be, and Colchester in Britain was the first city that was Roman-founded. Colchester Castle and Colchester United Football Club are in Colchester.

The Colchester Town Hall and the Jumbo Water Tower include landmarks. Near the centre, the Colchester School of Art and Design is in the Colchester Institute. Colchester United, a club in Football League Two who compete (Season 2018-19) and at Colchester Community Stadium play home games, succeeded them. St. Mary's School, and Colchester High School include schools in Colchester.

On the Great Eastern Main Line, Colchester station is operated by Abellio Greater Anglia. Colchester Town station and Hythe station, on the Line of Sunshine Coast, also serve the town. Formed in the Middle Pleistocene period, the hill of gravel upon, which Colchester, is built was shaped between the Ipswichian glaciation and the Anglian glaciation into a terrace by a precursor to the River Colne.

To the east of Colchester in Wivenhoe Park, the University of Essex is in the civil parish of Wivenhoe. Run mostly by Arriva Colchester and First Essex, as well as Beeston's, Hedingham Omnibuses, Chambers, Panther Travel (Essex), and Ipswich Buses, Colchester has a bus system which uses the Osborne Street bus station on the town centre's southern edge.
